Flood Elephants

More than 100 elephants in Ayutthaya were quickly evacuated to safer locations after a sudden rise in the water levels of the Lop Buri and Pa Sak rivers.

Elephant camp manager Itthipan Kaolamai said on Monday water from both rivers surged into Wang Chang in tambon Suan Prik, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district. The water was more than 30 centimetres deep.

Mr Itthipan said he expected the level to increase and farms in the area would be flooded soon. Baled hay for food and medicines, including antibiotics, were being readied to for the elephants.  Tourists might not be able to see elephant shows in some areas in Suan Prik, he said.
